"When I was about 13 or 14, we received a visit from the School’s Inspector who had clearly been tipped off that my father was employing someone under the age of 14. After speaking with my father, the inspectors seemed satisfied that I was not employed but simply helping out and that seemed to be the end of the matter. We had no idea whether the person who’d gone to the trouble of reporting it to the School’s Inspector knew I was my father’s son!

By the time I sat my General Certificate Examinations (GCEs) in 1954, I was clear in my mind that I didn’t want to continue with school. I never felt particularly academically gifted, but loved working in the shop, meeting customers and selling clothes. My teachers were reluctant for me to leave school, although it wasn’t unusual to finish school at 16 in the 1950s. Perhaps, through years of association with Ipswich School as a Governor, I have made it up to those teachers who didn’t want me to leave!"

Celebrate this spring

Whether you're looking to get the perfect outfit for a formal occasion or a smart-casual affair, we can get you suited, booted and ready for any occasion.

Word from Bill: Celebrations

In recent days I’ve been thinking about what makes a good celebration. Is it about spending time with your loved ones, wearing a great outfit, visiting a beautiful venue, or, is it about indulging in the finest food and wine? I guess it’s a little bit of everything, and often the anticipation and build-up to a celebration is as exciting as the main event. We love to hear all about customers’ celebrations, and at Coes we’re lucky enough to be indirectly involved in much of their planning; whether that’s through helping to put the perfect outfit together, or assisting in the choice of the ideal gift. So here’s the thing, this year it’s our turn to raise our champagne glasses and celebrate. My wonderful father, David Coe, is celebrating an incredible 60 years’ service at Coes.
