A Word From Bill: 2019 Reflection2 min read

As Christmas week approaches, may I take the opportunity to thank you all for your continued support and to wish you all a happy and healthy 2020.

This year has had a vast range of high notes and positives. Throughout the year we are grateful to have received so much positive feedback and support for our ‘Love Independent’ campaign which seemed to gain a momentum of its own.  We also had the pleasure of being a part of the Elmer Trail in Ipswich supporting the St Elizabeth’s Hospice. It was great seeing what local organisations and people can do to raise the profile and money for such a worthwhile cause.

As we reflect on the year of 2019, I don’t think many retailers will look at it with much fondness.  It seems a plethora of shops and businesses across the spectrum, both on the high street and online, have struggled to accommodate the rapid change that retail is undertaking combined with the uncertainty that has been present throughout the year. Here at Coes, we have not been immune to this and earlier this year we took the tough decision to close our store in Lowestoft after trading in the town for over 50 years.  The Lowestoft team fully accepted that trading conditions were unsuitable and therefore it made a painful exercise much easier for me.

However, during these difficult times, it’s our focus on local relationships with customers and other businesses in our community that keeps driving us forward and creates the atmosphere that we enjoy in our stores.  This combined with a new website, to be launched in the spring of 2020, will hopefully enable us to navigate this period and develop further in the New Year.

With best wishes,

William Coe

Merry Christmas
