With the winter months fast approaching, now is the perfect time to invest in a cosy new coat that will see you through the cold weather. To help you pick a style that is not only practical but perfectly on trend for autumn, we sat down with Topcoats Manager, Lisa West, to find out which coats and jackets are ideal for the new season..
What are the coat trends for AW14?
This season, parka style coats are very popular – among ladies, especially – as they are easy to wear and great for a casual look. Belted jackets, such as those from the Barbour Lifestyle collection, are also very on trends right now. For men specifically, slim fit wax jackets and military inspired coats continue to be a great choice for autumn and are as popular as ever.
What kind of colours and patterns will we be seeing this season?
Houndstooth, monochrome and tartan patterns feature heavily in many of our autumn/winter collections and we are also seeing splashes of gorgeously rich colours such as pinks, reds and rustic shades. As always, deep, natural and earthy shades such as aubergine and olive green dominate this season’s selection of outerwear.
What are your favourite coats this season and why?
I love the women’s Barbour Lifestyle Collection and my personal favourite is their beautiful olive Kelsall style. It features a nipped-in waist, tartan lining and a big fluffy fur hood, meaning it’s not only practical but it is also has a very fashionable look to it as well.
What kind of shapes are popular for A/W?
Slim fit is definitely our most popular shape all year round but we are also seeing a shift towards a classic square shape as the weather gets colder. This style is great for when you want to add lots of layers underneath, which makes it perfect for walking the dog or picking the kids up from school in the cold.
Which are your most popular coats so far this season?
Although we’ve been lucky enough to have a warm start to autumn, it has been a slow start for heavier coats. In contrast, men’s wax coats and ladies quilts have been very popular as they provide a great way to throw on an extra layer without adding extra bulk. Commuters also seem to favour a traditional raincoat with removable liner as its easily adaptable to mild or cold weather and provides protection from sudden downpours.
