Traditional craftsmanship, timeless styling and lightweight construction
Family run business, Loake, was started in Kettering, Northamptonshire in 1880 by brothers John, William and Thomas Loake. Five generations later and the business remains in the family and is now one of the most recognisable names in English shoemaking. Their aim today is to “simply make the most handsome, comfortable, durable shoes that we can and to make them affordable and available to everyone.”
After the original set-up in an outbuilding in Thomas Loake’s house in 1880 the brothers moved to Wood Street, Kettering, to open a factory which they still use today. At the time it was named the Unique Boot Factory and accommodated over 300 workers. It was considered one of finest and most advanced shoe factories in the country. During the First World War between 1914 and 1918 Loake manufactured Terrain boots, Convalescent boots and Despatch Riders boots for the British Army and then again for the forces, both Naval and RAF officers in the second world war between 1939 and 1945. In 2007 Loake was granted the Royal Warrant of Appointment to HM the Queen and later on that year they opened up a new warehouse to accommodate the increase in demand. In 2011 they opened their first shop situated in the heart of London and, most recently, Loake were the first of the traditional Northamptonshire shoemakers to launch a retail website.
Quality is at the heart of Loake. They have become renowned for the Goodyear welted construction which still takes place in the original factory in Kettering. The intricate process has origins going back over 300 years. Only the very highest quality materials are used, and each pair can take up to eight weeks to complete. Loake estimate that over 50 million pairs of Loake Goodyear welted boots and shoes have been produced since they began.
Today, they continue to combine bench-made shoemaking with the highest quality materials, but they now sell to over 60 countries worldwide. The history and origins of the business have not been lost as they push to keep the tradition that their forefathers worked so hard to establish whilst they also strive to be a forward-thinking company. Their history and heritage define their identity and values but they also need to keep a modern element so they can pass on traditional skills, knowledge and experience and guarantee that future generations continue to produce this fine footwear. After all, the business started from the three brothers’ entrepreneurial spirit, and the current managing directors wish to continue this.
Alongside the traditional Goodyear welted footwear they now design and produce a vast range of shoes with a variety of constructions meaning they are able to offer the perfect shoe for almost any occasion. The range they now offer has been extended to include alternative constructions in a range of classic and contemporary designs. This mix of traditional manufacturing techniques with an interpretation of current fashion trends means that Loake footwear is now being worn by younger people. These well-made, handcrafted men’s footwear really are suitable for all generations and for all occasions. Be part of it now and shop Loake with Coes here.
