Make space for the clothes you love

Rediscover and reinvigorate your wardrobe with our Wardrobe MOT. Say hello to the clothes you may have forgotten about and recycle unwanted clothing, freeing up space for the items you need. We want to help you build a more personal, sustainable, and long-lasting wardrobe. Buy better, wear longer, make a Smart Choice.

What's in your wardrobe?

80% of the time people wear 20% of their wardrobe and this could be for a variety of reasons - from having clothes which are too tight to clothes which are unwearable. The Wardrobe MOT will help you focus on the clothes you love wearing and reserve the space for replacement pieces.

Let's get started: Firstly, check your wardrobe and take out the items which have seen better days, are broken or need repairing and put them in a pile.

What to keep?

Now, let's take a look what's left in your wardrobe and ask yourself a few questions about each one:

  • Do I love it?
  • Does it fit just right, now?
  • Can I wear this in multiple ways with different outfits?
  • Is this item in good condition?
  • Do I look good or feel good wearing it?
  • Have I worn this item in the past year?
  • Have I ever worn this garment?
  • Is this something I plan to wear (rather than something only kept for sentimental reasons)?

  • If you honestly answered no to these questions, maybe it's time to think about letting those garments go. If you’re unsure on an item set it aside and come back to it later. Take a breather, have a cup of tea and when you're ready ask yourself those questions again. If it's a no, put it aside.

If you're done, pass it on.

Now that you've decided what you're keeping you can start to work through the two piles you have created:

  • Items that have seen better days, broken or need repairing.
  • Items you no longer need in your life.

  • It's time now to grab 5 bags (or boxes) which you can label up with the following:

Sell. You can take these along to your local pre-loved shops or sell them second-hand on marketplaces like Facebook or eBay.
Donate. Take these to your local charity shop.
Swap. Ask your friends and family if they would be willing to do a swap for something that you’d want to wear.
Fix. Minor rips and tears can be sorted. If you can fix them yourself great! Otherwise, almost anything bought at Coes can usually be adjusted or repaired by us.
Recycle. Clothes and textiles that simply cannot be reused or repaired can be recycled at a clothing bank.

    Shop thoughtfully.

Wardrobe tidied? Unwanted clothes sorted? Now it's time to take one more look at that wardrobe and see if there's anything missing. Had to throw a staple t-shirt because of a rip? No longer have an easy-to-wear pair of jeans because none of them fit anymore?

You've come this far, so take the time to find replacement items of clothing that really suit your body, your style, and your needs. Going for quality over quantity, a timeless style and trans-seasonal clothing will make your wardrobe more sustainable and last longer.

At Coes we try to offer great quality items that will last for many years to come. Whether you're shopping in-store or online, our knowledgeable team are here to help you find the perfect items to suit you, ensuring they won't be left hanging in your wardrobe unworn or unused. We also offer free alterations, so if anything doesn’t fit just right, then let us know.

Look after your clothes so they last longer.

If you look after your clothes properly, you'll have to replace things less often - bonus! From caring for your cashmere to washing your denim inside out, go the extra mile to ensure your clothes remain in good condition for longer.

Every time we wash our clothes, millions of tiny fibres (some of them plastic) are shed from the fabric and rinsed out into our water systems, and eventually our oceans. Washing carefully, less often, on gentler cycles can help our clothes last longer and reduce the impact of our laundry.

Here are a few clothing care tips to help your clothes last longer:

  • Wash cooler - this will help your clothes last longer, save you electricity and heat, as well as reducing microfibre release.
  • Air dry clothes where possible. The hot temperatures of a tumble dryer makes your clothes wear faster.
  • Separate your colours, whites and delicates. Zip up any zippers to avoid them causing snags on other fabrics.
  •

    Make a promise.

So, we're nearly at the end but it's important that we now commit to what we've learnt in this process and implement some healthy new habits when it comes to our wardrobes.

  • Keep your clothes in use for as long as possible, look after them and wear them again and again.
  • When buying new clothing, make thoughtful and considered purchases. Ask yourself, how was this made and where? What is it made from? And most importantly will it work with my current wardrobe?
  • Cleanse your wardrobe regularly, repeat steps 1 to 3 every 6-12 months to ensure your wardrobe is filled with pieces you love to wear.
  • At Coes, we can help you stay on track with our free Personal Styling service that we offer in-store and online via video call if you prefer to stay in the comfort of your own home.
