Stay Dry This Season
The slow soak through the shoulders of a coat that turns out not to be waterproof after all. The shoes that absorb water through the seams and stay damp for two days. The trousers that wick water up from the ankle until half the leg is wet. By the time you arrive at wherever you were going, you're cold, uncomfortable, slightly embarrassed, and forty minutes away from being dry again even if you can change immediately.
The four-city circuit
The fashion week calendar runs twice a year for womenswear (autumn and spring) and twice for menswear, with each season traveling through New York, London, Milan, and Paris in roughly that order. Each city has a personality, and understanding the differences is most of the work.
What the runway is actually doing
If you watch a single show, it can look arbitrary: this designer likes oversized blazers, that one likes neon, the other one has done a collection about jellyfish. Watching across a full season, patterns start to surface. Three or four designers in different cities are all doing something with hip-slung skirts. Half the menswear shows have featured short shorts. A particular shade of butter yellow is suddenly everywhere.
What's worth watching for
You don't need to be a fashion student to read the runway productively. A few things to pay attention to that tell you most of what you need to know - silhouette, colour, volume, reference points and the outliers.
